{"id":12063,"date":"2019-01-14T18:31:14","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T18:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/?p=12063"},"modified":"2019-01-14T18:31:14","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T18:31:14","slug":"dormer-roofs-tutorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/?p=12063","title":{"rendered":"Dormer Roofs Tutorial"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dormers are a challenge to build, but this tutorial covers two designs that I&#8217;ve found to work well in my own models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first is a snowy roof dormer that I used in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/?p=8625\">Streets of Daydelon.<\/a> You will need slots 2&#215;4 studs in area in the roof to accommodate the dormer. Don&#8217;t worry about the 3&#215;3 slot here, that was to allow for a chimney. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I used prefab windows, and then some SNOT 2&#215;2 round tiles match smoothly with the back of the window frame. For this house I needed to offset the windows by a half stud to get a smooth fit with the roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another view of the window setup. Using solid reddish brown lattices is helpful here, as then the structure behind the window isn&#8217;t visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is how the roof will fit over the windows. Notice the 1&#215;2 curved slopes on either side of the window, those are necessary to get the best fit with the dormer roof. And above those slopes use all tiles on the roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The roof itself is made up of these three elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/6-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By using the 1&#215;1 brick with stud to connect the pair of wedge plates you get a nice 45\u00b0 roof slope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/7-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The brick with stud is also what holds the roof section in place, as it fits into the gap behind the 2&#215;2 round tile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/8-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My second design uses the same basic principles, but has a larger roof and was used in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/?p=11058\">Gardar&#8217;s Cloth Goods<\/a>. Again the main roof has a 45\u00b0 slope, this time accomplished via click hinges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/9-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here also the slot is 2&#215;4 studs in area. Though this time there isn&#8217;t a need for curved slopes on the adjacent roof edges. Just a 1&#215;2 tile raised by a plate at the top edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/10-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This time 3&#215;3 wedge plates and a travis brick are used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/11-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And as you can see, regular lattices work fine with this design as there is no need for the SNOT 2&#215;2 round tile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/12-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finish off the dormer with two 1&#215;1 round bricks and a 1&#215;1 cone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/13-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And there are two dormer designs that you can hopefully incorporate in your own models!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dormers are a challenge to build, but this tutorial covers two designs that I&#8217;ve found to work well in my own models.
