{"id":13804,"date":"2019-08-08T14:53:22","date_gmt":"2019-08-08T14:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/?p=13804"},"modified":"2019-08-08T14:53:22","modified_gmt":"2019-08-08T14:53:22","slug":"magnetic-mediator-build-log","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/?p=13804","title":{"rendered":"Magnetic Mediator: Build Log"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I started off 2019 with a star fighter for Space Jam, and this post details its build process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First I tried experimenting with the cockpit using a printed Space Police canopy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These missile launchers are something I always enjoy incorporating when possible, and with play functions playing an important part in the Star Fighter category I planned to have two of the them in the ship. On the right is an arch combination that gave a nice tight fit around the missile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/3-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary play feature involved magnets and a docking bay. This rough setup gave me a good idea of what distance was needed between the prongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/4-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some long wedge elements worked well on the outer sides of the prongs, with stripes of red on the top and bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/5-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t sure exactly how the cockpit would fit against the main body of the craft, so this was just a quick setup to get a better idea of how it would work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/6-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Prison pods of the same style as my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/?p=12244\">Rebel Wrangler&#8217;s fit easily in the back. <\/a><br>And at this point I realized the outside of the cockpit pod looked very plain all in bley, so I tried adding 4&#215;4 car roofs in red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/7-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn&#8217;t want the magnets to look out of place, so black greebles were added around them. This SNOT slope setup at the back of the docking bay seemed a bit out of place to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/8-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So I tried continuing the greebles across. Which was better, but still not quite what I wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/9-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually I settled on this design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/10-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I could move onto finishing the rear of the prongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/12-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And incorporating the cockpit again too. I planned to have the missile launchers in a mirrored pod on the opposite side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/13-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Which worked, but this layout made the star fighter nearly as wide as it was long. Not very sleek looking!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/14-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So I reworked the prongs to allow the outer pods to fit several studs nearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/15-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This worked a lot better and next I could decide what to add between the prison pods on top of the ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/16-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>All good star fighters need plenty of weaponry so I built a quad cannon setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/17-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last were the thrusters &#8211; I tried two options as shown here, and decided the 2&#215;2 dish design was best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/19-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With the main star fighter complete it was time to get going on the small police speeder to fit in the docking bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/20-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I tried to match the style of speeder to the star fighter, and had another neat trans green windscreen to use. The shape ended up being very reminiscent of a helicopter, which seemed fitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/21-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a setup I experimented with and though it looked completely out of place, I thought the intersecting square motif was interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I came up with a more suitable solution later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brickbuilt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/23.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last I decided to add a third vehicle for the police to be after. This one came together far quicker than the others, and made good use of our limited teal parts selection.
