Let’s see if I still remember how to do this, as we take a look behind the scenes at what went into photographing my Berry Bliss Waffles.

As with all of my builds in the food series I started earlier this year, presentation was a huge part of the model. I wanted to convey a cozy, laid back morning, with a delicious breakfast to sit down to. This first attempt was certainly not the look I was going for! I realized after shooting it (and getting feedback from a couple friends), that the white counter-top was just too much white when combined with the white plate, white mug, and white bowl.

With that in mind, we tried a bit of a different setup the next day – this time utilizing our dining room table. This definitely was a big improvement over the white counter-top, but there were still several things I didn’t like. One of those was how little you saw of the newspaper, which was tucked under the plate.

So with the next shot we experimented with a lower angle. More of the newspaper was now visible, but you could no longer see the hot chocolate in the mug. Definitely a no-go!

After contemplating what other layouts might work, we swapped the one large plate for two smaller ones, with a waffle on each. I was quite pleased with the lighting and colors of this shot, but was getting less and less convinced that I liked the stick of butter, which looked more like a yellow rectangle on a platter than it did butter.

With that in mind I tossed the butter to the side and replaced it with a bowl of berries. Much better, right?

Well, sort of. I still wanted to include a newspaper though – so, just like with the butter, we tossed the berries aside and put the newspaper in it’s place. Not bad, but something about the waffles themselves didn’t seem quite right – then it dawned on me that with one waffle on each plate you didn’t get that natural curve, like when they were stacked.

So, back to the stack it was! I really feel like this composition worked out nicely, and I was able to include all the elements I wanted to – the bowl of berries, the napkin and fork, and of course, the newspaper.

And here’s the final, edited shot:

Thanks for reading, we hope you found this build log enjoyable!
