Tapering Cylinder Tutorial

This guide takes a look at the technique I used in my 08 Nighthawk model to achieve a large tapering cylinder.

The cylinder itself is mostly four stud wide sections connected by hinge plates. And then some 1×2 hinge bricks allow for the tapering effect.

Assemblies like this use 1×2 panels and 1×2 cheese to fill gaps.

Then they’re attached to the 1×2 hinge bricks.

Depending on where the section is located on the cylinder, the SNOT assembly varies slightly.

Technically I only did a half cylinder, but you could continue the pattern shown before to get a complete circle.

The finished product.

And how it looked in the actual build.

I got plenty of comments on that section of the model, so hopefully this look at the design was useful!

One Comment:

  1. Thanks for sharing the details Isaac! As I like anything that is round I especially like this part of the build – it’s an eye-catcher on the completed ship 🙂
