Slumbering Giant

My 6th submission for the RogueOlympics. Quite a fun category again this week, as the prompt was “Nature”. It took me most of the week to decide what to build, but eventually I settled on the idea of a moss covered stone golem. Taking some influence from a variety of things: Rock Monsters in the Power Miners theme, earth golem concept art online, our previous Titan Tot builds, and the Veggietales Rock Monsters from The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything.

I wanted him to be able to ‘awake’ from looking like a normal boulder to a lumbering golem and am very happy that it worked out. Besides the transforming function I spent the most time on his head trying to capture an appropriately craggy expression.

For the first time I used fewer than 101 elements! Just 86 if counting the flowers on a sprue as a single part, or 98 if considering each flower separate.

  1. How’s the giant’s head fold in and out. It looks like it might be just arranging the parts differently or is it the bar and clip that change the angle? It doesn’t look like it would work with that bar and clip you’ve got connecting the head to the body.

    • The head is connected to a ball joint in the core, so it can swivel around and hinge up and down to change positions between boulder and golem mode.

  2. What’s the piece in box 54?
Do you have any pictures of the underside? I’m trying to build this myself.

    • If I recall correctly, it’s this element.
And unfortunately I have no photos from the bottom, and also took the model apart some time ago.
Each leg was built identically, so if there is x4 or x8 of an element in the overview, it almost certainly was used for the legs.

      • Thanks for the tip about his legs- helped narrow down what goes where. This guy is pretty cute- although it’s impossible to not have bits pop off when you unfold his legs and head.

  3. Could you send me building instructions?
