Lyra’s first portal opened when she was four: a brief glimpse into a distant desert that left a small pile of sand as proof it was not just their imagination. Well aware that dangerous people would love to acquire a young portalborne, her parents did their best to keep her hidden at home.
Her father was able to borrow books from the baron occasionally, and these would keep Lyra occupied for hours, reading by the fire. “Stories are safer than the real thing,” her mother would say.
So Lyra kept reading, ever curious to discover what the places and people described would really be like.
