Realm of the Shrooms: Build Log

Today we’ll be taking a look behind the scenes at my Realm of the Shrooms creation, which was built for the ABS Builder Challenge Season 1 Finale. Let’s get to it!

After seeing that the seed part was dark red 1×2 bows, one of my first ideas was to build a fantasy world with mushroom houses, using the seed part as the tops of the mushrooms. As such, the ‘shrooms were the first things I built. Getting a nice shape for the stalks of the mushrooms was one of the main challenges – using a combination of 1x2x3 slopes and angled plates with curved slopes worked nicely for the larger mushroom, and then I just took the basic design and shrunk it slightly to create a smaller house. It was a lot of fun incorporating the various details into the houses, such as the doorways and windows.

After finishing the mushrooms, I moved on to the surrounding landscape. Because I had used reddish brown as the building details, and I didn’t them want to blend in with the rest of the build, I decided to use dark brown for the dirt. Once the base was roughed out, I started on another house – this time built into a rock. The result was, shall we say, less than stellar.

I quickly decided to ditch the house idea, and just make a regular rock – the result was much better.

All that I needed to do now was add the finishing landscape details and foliage! This build seemed like the perfect opportunity to put some large Duplo plant pieces we had sitting around to good use, so I did just that. I think they really added a lot to the whimsical feel of the build, which is exactly what I wanted. It was even more irresistible, considering the Iron Builder round that was going on at the time. I wasn’t entirely sold on the palm leaves behind the houses though.

So I decided to switch them out for some simple trees. And it was done!
