2018 Recap

2018 was quite a busy year for the Brickbuilt team! We created 40 new Tutorials plus 11 Guest Tutorials, 65 MOCs, and 23 Build Logs.

John’s Recap:
While not my most productive year, I had a lot of fun with the builds I did manage. Winter Serenity and my micro Ice Planet HQ were two of the most enjoyable models to build last year, and also some of my favorites overall.

I didn’t get to enter as many contests as I would have liked to, as building for Brickworld Chicago kept me busy for the majority of the first half of the year. It was well worth it though! Brickworld was by far the funnest LEGO convention I have ever been to, and I can’t wait to go back there again in 2020.

And of course, we once again hosted the Summer Joust this summer – for the third time! Hard to believe it’s already been 3 years now. As usual it was incredibly rewarding to see so many wonderful builds entered.

The Colossal Castle Contest was the last highlight of the year for me, even if I didn’t manage to get as many entries in as I would have liked. Still, 7 isn’t too bad!

Most popular builds: Winter Serenity – 370 faves, The Island of El Harraz – 305 faves, Villum Homestead – 289 faves. Winter Serenity also received the most comments – 46. Which is the most of all time for me!

Isaac’s Recap:
I managed 48 builds in 2018, mainly due to my load of entries for the Colossal Castle Contest. Once again I started the year with a Skyrim model.

It was great competing in Marchitecture for my second successive year, and I think Lichtenstein Castle is my best Architecture scaled build yet.

Our summer had plenty of LEGO activities going on between the Summer Joust and Brickworld Chicago. We received a record number of entries in the Summer Joust, 147! Brickworld was absolutely incredible. Definitely the funnest time I’ve had in the LEGO community. See our previous post for more details on our time there.

I built my 4th SHIP for SHIPtember, and finally achieved a SHIP I’m pleased with.

This fall I was honored to take over as leader of Mitgardia in the Guilds of Historica, and it’s been really exciting to see that community flourishing again! If you like building in the Castle theme, you should really check it out.

And of course I finished off the year by participating in the Colossal Castle Contest once again. It was my 8th year competing, and I made far more entries than I ever have before, and most probably more than I’ll ever make again.

Most popular builds of the year: Olureon Monastery – 338 faves, Imladris – 327 faves, Gardar’s Cloth Goods – 315 faves. And surprisingly, my creation to receive most comments was Dwaven Ballistas with 34.

Thank you all for your continued support! And let us know if there were any Builds, Build Logs, or Tutorials that stood out to you from our 2018 content.

  1. Hey John and Isaac!
2018 was my first full year involved in the LEGO community, and you two were a big part of it. It was amazing to meet you guys at Brickworld, and fun to compete in the Summer Joust! My favorite build from John was The Island of El Harraz, and from Isaac, Riverwood Watermill.
I’m not the most active of builders, but I just became a second-semester senior, so I’ll hopefully be more productive like you guys in 2019. Suggestion: you two should do another large, Life in Nordheim sized collab next year, or for Brickworld 2020.
    Keep doing what you’re doing!

    • Thanks Kevin! Great suggestion to do another large collab, the other day I was talking with John about potentially doing one this year 🙂
