Apple Picking: Build Log

This was the first build of my apple cider production entry into the CCC, and like many of our models it started with a simple base made of plates.

Rather than continuing work on the landscape I decided to experiment with a few trees. Mainly so I could figure out their size, quantity, and placement in the scene.

After building those first two trees, I decided four trees would fill the scene nicely. Next I laid out the orchard’s terraces. Here the bley 1×2 bricks mark where stone retaining walls would be placed at each elevation change.

After that it was easy to lay down dark tan plates, and start adding dark green over that. I left some exposed patches of dark tan where I planned to place the trees.

Normally I would use a filler color besides black behind the stone walls, but I was using 1×1 round plates as part of the texture and wanted to make sure no glimpses of out of place colors leaked through.

The middle terrace was not going to have any trees, so no large sections of dark tan were left exposed.

Builds of this size make it easier to work with newer colors like dark green and dark tan since not as many parts are needed.

Then since I had already built two trees I just had to attach those to the landscape, and then make the back two.

And see how many apples I could find for use in the trees!

Finally I added a few plants, some animals, and the figs. This stage is a lot of fun as you get to experiment with various details to flesh out the scene.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Very nice build. Can you do a tutorial on the trees? I curious how you made them.

  2. How did you make the blue bird up in the corner of the MOC? Just interested, it looks kind of neat.
