Island Outpost: Build Log

Since I only had the basic idea of what I wanted this model to look like: a small fort on an island surrounded by water, I started off with just building a bit of water. I used 1×2 trans clear plates over the top of medium blue plates to start with, planning to later add another layer of trans medium blue plates over the trans clear. Next I needed to figure out the fort layout so I could make the island a fitting size. After messing around with some bley plates and hinges, I settled on this design.

1

Dark tan rockwork made the build more unique, and helped set the tropical island look. All the rockwork was built in simple studs up style.

2

I used the layout prototype during the rockwork building process, to make sure I was making the island the correct shape.

3

Here the rockwork is basically done, and I’ll need to set up tiles under the angled section of wall. We have posted a tutorial about this process before.

After adding a little dock made of sideways headlight bricks and 1×6 tiles, it was time to start building the fort’s walls. I knew I wanted white as the predominant color, but wasn’t sure which colors I would use for accents, so I experimented with several different options.

5

Eventually I ended up choosing tan, with bley 1×1 round plates and tiles for the texturing. You can also catch a glimpse of the prison cell hidden inside the angled wall section now.

6

The gun loops use 1×3 arches turned upside down to capture the proper shape. And I then used a few headlight bricks to reverse back to studs up building.

7

Cannon in place, and battlements started.

8

Here are two of the window styles I tried for the tower, the left one was used in the finished model.

9

The dark blue roof also took several iterations to succeed. I ended up making the roof 9 studs wide to give a half stud offset on either side.

10

I have been wanting to use the new 1×4 rounded top window piece for sometime, and was finally able to do so in this MOC. At this point the fort is finished, but the island needs vegetation added, and the water detailed.

After which, it ended up looking like this:

  1. Gorgeous build, the textures are perfect and not over-done. This outpost looks like it would very nicely complement a certain imperial port!

  2. I love the textures, colors and shape of this little outpost. I think it would complement your imperial outpost quite well!

  3. Awesome job! I really like this one! Although small for your usual size, this looks really nice with the intricate layout! Keep it up! 😀

  4. Cool, Very unique shape, I’m so jelly of your tan brick bricks… ;P
